Don Hagelberg took part in the Civil Rights movement of the late 1950’s and, while managing The Precarious Vision Coffee House in San Francisco, he co-wrote “An Artists’ Living Cooperative,” which helped to spawn the “communes” of the early 1960’s.
He was imprisoned in 1964-1965 for refusing Induction into the army on November 22, 1963.
Attempting higher education, he could never seem to complete any college course with satisfaction unless it was Creative Writing.
He created, produced and hosted Live Poets, a two hour program featuring five poets each week, which was broadcasted on a San Francisco Bay Area listener-supported, radio station in the 1970’s.
A founding member of the Bay Area Poets’ Coalition [BAPC], he was the first editor of their monthly publication, Poemphlet, later re-named Poetalk.
In the early 2000’s, Don suggested to the British Broadcasting Corporation [BBC] that they broadcast The Kalevala in English. They did: in selected installments. It pleased him that so many international listeners heard chapters of this epic poem.
