After two passes and the dreaded multi 2 diamonds, I didn't have enough for a 2NT bid, but since LHO was a passed hand and the vulnerability was favorable, I felt that was more representative than the classic double with a balanced 13-15...
Lots of bridge in the news lately, unfortuately not about the game. Fortunately cooler heads have prevailed, so we can now move back to bridge hands. Here is an interesting hand from the Transnationals in Shanghai.
Our opponents bid as shown at the other table against our teammates Agustin Madala and Antonio Sementa. West (Madala) found the sensible lead of the heart king since that suit needed less help, and declarer (perhaps wrongly) ducked. West now found the threatening spade shift. Declarer was not too worried since he could cash the AK of clubs and then take the diamond finesse into the safe hand (protecting his remaining x) however, with clubs 4-1 West was able to win the , cash two clubs and a spade to go with the trick one heart winner, down one.
Unfortunately this was still a small loss. We got to DBLed which provided a different sort of play problem after a heart lead. With clubs likely 4-1 (from the DBL) there was little point in taking the diamond finesse (if the is onside third, West can ruff the third diamond to prevent throwing away both hearts). So I tried the AK of clubs then AK of diamonds (dropping the queen) and threw a heart away on the , but West ruffed in to cash a heart for down 1. So lose 3.
I do not know the exact odds, but I would think that declarer should win the first heart lead and immediately play the A,K diamonds. This always makes 3NT when the Q diamonds is singleton or doubleton or when hearts are 4-3 or 6-1 when the long heart holder does not hold the Q Diamonds guarded.
Hi Chip, Isn't 5C the place to be over the long haul? Seems safer to me even if it did lose a couple of IMPs for you. BTW, re the Shanghai Incident, tell Jan to go easy on Gail Greenberg. We need patriots who speak their minds on important issues, even in venues where some may cringe at the candor. Americans should be able speak freely at all times without fear of retribution.
