Students at universities become mainly focused on "practical knowledge" that leads to high paid jobs. The values by which we guide our technological development and application become afterthoughts. We must wonder if technology now controls human life more than humans control technology.

I couldn’t help but wonder shall we live the healthy lives the best we can according to our set of standards or shall we follow the world ‘trends’, starve, die and be remembered as ‘beautiful and thin’ sticks without cellulite? I guess many of us should re-examine our own values and listen to ourselves, our body and biorhythm trying to make a balance in life.

New fuel cell technology

New technology could provide low-cost power without CO2 emissions, could be a big step in reducing global warming

- A big problem with fuel cell technology is its use of platinum as a catalyst. This makes it very expensive and makes it hard to compete with traditional internal-combustion engines.

Now, a new technology for fuel cells has the potential to be cost-competitive with fossil fuels. This new design doesn't use any platinum, so can be dramatically cheaper than older designs.

Platinum-based fuel cells burn hydrogen, which has its own problems in terms of distribution, storage, and safety.

The new design uses a liquid fuel called hydrazine hydrate, which is a liquid, and doesn't contain any carbon so doesn't result in CO2 emissions.

Looks like this could be a big step in moving towards reduced greenhouse gases, I hope it all pans out.

See Science News "Platinumfree fuel cell" [subscription required]. The invention was announced by engineers at Daihatsu, a unit of Toyota, in the Oct 22 issue of Angewandte Chemie.
